MSNBC host Rachel Maddows took to her show Wednesday morning to talk about the upcoming primary election in the United States.
In a segment that focused on the upcoming vote in Iowa, Maddow described how the two senators from Vermont are trying to turn Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid into a movement.
Sanders’ campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, told CNN earlier this month that the campaign has “a massive, unprecedented ground game” in Iowa.
But Sanders’ campaign has yet to announce how much it will spend in the state.
We’re talking millions, tens of millions of dollars, and Maddow pointed out that Sanders has not released how much he has raised for his campaign so far.
Sanders has been trying to get his campaign to do more than just spend money on advertising, Maddows said, and he wants the movement to be a “movement of the people.”
“They’re saying to him, ‘Bernie, we want you to be president.
You can do this.
We need you,'” Maddow said.
Sanders responded by saying that he’s been looking forward to the Iowa caucuses for a long time and said that he has been “fearless and unafraid” in his campaign, and that he’ll continue to be.
“This is an opportunity for me, and it’s an opportunity to be on the front lines in the fight to fight for a better America and to fight against the billionaires and the plutocrats,” Sanders said.
Maddow pointed to some of the other major issues facing the country, including the debt crisis, the rise of ISIS, the threat of climate change, and the threat that the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement could put America at war.
Sanders and Warren are currently vying for the Democratic nomination in the upcoming general election.
The MSNBC host also spoke about the “biggest story” in the world right now: the Zika virus.
“What we know is that it’s caused an epidemic, an unprecedented global epidemic, that’s killing thousands of people, it’s threatening the very fabric of this nation, and we’re not going to let it get out of control,” Maddow explained.
Madow said the current administration is trying to limit the spread of the virus and said she was surprised that the current U.S. Congress doesn’t have the power to pass new legislation.
She also said that there’s been a surge in anti-Muslim sentiment and that there are now a number of anti-immigrant and anti-black groups in the U.s.
But she said she thinks there’s more going on behind the scenes.
“We’re going to see an explosion of hate speech, we’re going see an expansion of anti -Semitism, anti-government, anti -government groups, anti immigration groups,” Maddows explained.
